The simple subjects

For a few years I focused on photographing a few mundane objects, usually in my neighborhood, over and over and over. I photographed every interesting porch and began noticing I had also compiled a large group of cats on porches, so those both became a subject I sought after. I also loved photographing dumpsters and found them so interesting and beautiful I started calling them DumpsterScape. I also photographed every heart I saw, whether weather it was graffitied, stickered, penciled or chalked. I was also interested in photographing all the free piles in my neighborhood. I thought it was a great way of sharing resources in my community and wanted to preserve and share that spirit to other neighborhoods, so I photographed all of them.

After I had complied a huge library of these subjects I wanted a way to showcase them and after attending several art markets I felt a zine was the best way to present a collection of mundane photographs photograph in an interesting a interesting way and complete way.

I was inspired by the work of Bernad and Hilla Becher, two mid-century influential German photographers who were known for their exact, maybe at first glance stale but perfect representations of industrial architecture that have all is all since been made since made obsolete. I also was overwhelmed walking in my beautiful neighborhood wanting to photograph and document everything. Giving myself a couple subjects I was seeking and a few rules about the photography, (such as the lens, location of light and angles) gave me a direction and a goal.
